AI Mode passed 1 billion monthly users about a year after launch, one of the fastest climbs to that scale of any product Google has shipped. Here's how it actually works, and how to find out if your brand shows up in it.

AI Mode tracking means checking whether Google's AI Mode, a fully conversational search experience that passed 1 billion monthly users in its first year, names your brand across an opening question and its natural follow-ups. Because AI Mode reasons across a multi-turn conversation using a technique called Query Fan-Out rather than matching a single query, it needs its own check, separate from your classic Google ranking.
AI Mode is a fully conversational search experience Google rolled out in the US in May 2025, expanding to the UK that July, India in August, and the EU (including Italy) by October, reaching close to 200 countries and around 100 languages, with a single wave adding 53 languages at once, by the end of that year. Instead of a page of ranked links, you get a written answer you can question further in the same thread, the same interaction model as ChatGPT or Perplexity, layered directly into Google Search rather than shipped as a separate app.
Adoption has been unusually fast even by Google's standards: it reached 75 million daily users and 100 million monthly users within about six months of launch, then Sundar Pichai told Google I/O 2026 that it had crossed 1 billion monthly active users roughly a year after launch, one of the fastest climbs to that scale of any consumer product Google has shipped.
The mechanism that makes AI Mode different from a single AI Overview is something Google calls Query Fan-Out. Instead of running your question as one search, AI Mode breaks it into several related sub-queries, runs them in parallel, and synthesises the results into one answer. That's also why AI Mode responses run roughly four times longer than a typical AI Overview: it's assembling a wider spread of underlying searches before it writes anything.
It shows up in how people actually use it, too. Independent clickstream research found the average AI Mode query runs about 7.2 words, nearly double the 4-word average for classic Google search, and Google's own data describes the average AI Mode search as roughly three times longer than a typical query. People are asking more specific, more conversational questions, and increasingly following up in the same thread rather than starting a fresh search.
Because Query Fan-Out reasons across several sub-queries and a conversation can continue across follow-ups, a single opening question tells you less than it would on a classic search check. The brands named in the first answer aren't necessarily the ones still named three follow-up questions later, and testing only the opener misses exactly the behaviour AI Mode is built around.
It also means content built narrowly for one keyword is a weaker signal here than content that thoroughly answers the surrounding cluster of questions a real buyer would ask next, since that's effectively what Query Fan-Out is already simulating on Google's side.
Open AI Mode and ask the initial buyer question you'd expect someone to type, then follow up naturally the way a real buyer would rather than starting over each time. Log whether you're named at each turn, not just the first one, and note which competitors get introduced as the conversation goes on.
Compare this against your classic Google ranking for the same query. A gap between a strong classic ranking and no AI Mode mention is a clear signal that your content answers the single keyword well but not the wider cluster of follow-up questions AI Mode is fanning out into.
AI Overviews run on a customised Gemini model working alongside Google's existing ranking systems, generating a single-query summary shown above the classic results. AI Mode is the fully conversational surface built on Query Fan-Out, reasoning across multiple sub-queries and follow-up turns rather than one search. Both draw on related underlying technology but behave, and need to be tracked, differently: see the AI Overview tracking guide for that surface specifically.
